This week we will be learning lots of exciting things! We will be starting Chapter 2 of our My Math book--learning about prime factorization and multiplication strategies! We are continuing to work toward our independent reading goals, and will be reading a story together as a class and working on comprehension and grammar concepts. In writing this week, we will be focusing on the "voice" writing trait, and will be doing some fun assignments to practice showing personality in our writing! We will be continuing our landforms and exploration unit as well. This week we will be focusing on weathering, erosion, and deposition and learning which landforms are created by these processes. We will also be learning about the explorers who came to America! Students will be starting an explorer report this week that will need to be completed at home over the next week.
This week is going to be busy, even though it's a short week! We have finished chapter 1 in our math books, so this week we will be doing lots of review and then taking the chapter 1 test! We have a new list of 30 spelling words and are continuing to work toward our independent reading goals for the month. We will also be starting a new story as a class, and practicing some comprehension strategies. This week we are focusing on the writing trait of sentence fluency. Students will be doing some exercises and assignments to practice this trait in class. We are also delving into our exploration unit--we will be learning about the early people in America and the explorers who helped discover our country. We are also continuing to learn about landforms and how they are created. We will be exploring earthquakes, weathering, erosion, uplift, and deposition this week!
This week we are learning lots of interesting things! In math we are learning about the place value of decimals and how to compare decimal numbers. In reading, we are working toward our goal of each student reading at least 3 books independently this month, and have discussed the concept of conflict as it applies to stories and plot. This week we are focusing on the word choice writing trait, and are working on a descriptive essay about a place they are familiar with--describing it using all the five senses, using as many "purple words" as they can! (Ask your student about purple words!) For science and social studies, we are learning all about landforms and the geography of the United States. We are learning about the different plate boundaries and the landforms caused by the movement of tectonic plates, as well as the different landform regions in our country!
